Trapped in the underground theatre world of 1890s New Orleans, Hale Ferrer has only one goal: escape. But not without Teeny, the orphan-girl she rescued from the streets and promised to protect.

Freddie Lovel, Hale’s wealthy Parisian suitor, seems to be the easy solution. If only his touch could arouse her interest like Beau’s, the penniless stagehand who captures her heart.

A Message from the Author herself:

Way Down in New Orleans…
By Leigh Talbert Moore
Setting was actually not the first thing in my mind when I started writing my new book Rouge. But it was a close second.

It was fall of 2010, my daughters were back in school, and I was sitting down after a long summer to get back to writing.

I’d written three contemporary YA books (one is what we now call “New Adult”), and I wanted to do something completely different. So I started listening to music, looking at pictures, daydreaming, and this idea stuck in my head…

What if there were these two orphaned girls and one was older, more like a protector of the younger one… And then the little one is threatened. How far would the older one go to keep her safe? What would she risk? What would she give up?

Once I’d sketched out all the scenarios in my head, I had to figure out where it should happen. Oliver Twist had sort-of inspired some of my thoughts, and it’s set in London. Then it hit me—New Orleans!

I’m a south Louisiana native and having spent a lot of time in the city, its European flair seemed just right. But even somewhere as decadent as “the Big Easy” wouldn’t allow the things that happen in my story to go unpunished. So I went back in time.

I decided a light historical, set in a theater-slash-brothel on a street like Bourbon Street, with lots of color and music… I love Moulin Rouge, which was set in Paris, so I thought maybe the owner of my theater could be taking cues from theirs (the swing coming down, etc.).

Ultimately, it was the only place it could’ve happened. New Orleans adds the darkness, the flavor, the heat. Something about it makes you think anything is possible. And I think were it anywhere else, the story wouldn’t sizzle in quite the same way.

Thanks for reading! I hope you guys love my book.

It's always interesting to hear how authors first think up the concepts for their books. I'm looking forward to this one. Great post! 🙂

Mmhh… I do have to say, I find it really hard not to judge a book by its cover! Haha. I mean, I try not to, but you can't help first impressions.
