Fall of Night (The Morganville Vampires #14)
by Rachel Caine
Publisher – Allison and Busby
Released – May 3rd 2013
Purchase – Amazon | The Book Depository

Thanks to its unique combination of human and vampire residents, Morganville, Texas, is a small college town with big-time problems. When student Claire Danvers gets the chance to experience life on the outside, she takes it. But Morganville isn’t the only town with vampire trouble…

Claire never thought she’d leave Morganville, but when she gets accepted into the graduate program at MIT, she can’t pass up the opportunity. Saying good-bye to her friends is bittersweet, especially since things are still raw and unsettled between Claire and her boyfriend, Shane.

Her new life at MIT is scary and exciting, but Morganville is never really far from Claire’s mind. Enrolled in a special advanced study program with Professor Irene Anderson, a former Morganville native, Claire is able to work on her machine, which is designed to cancel the mental abilities of vampires.

But when she begins testing her machine on live subjects, things quickly spiral out of control, and Claire starts to wonder whether leaving Morganville was the last mistake she’ll ever make…

WARNING: Spoilers if you haven’t got this far!

Fourteen books into a series, what do you really expect? How can the characters relationships last this long? What other stories can come from Rachel Caine’s The Morganville Vampire Series? These are the questions that surrounded my mind from the moment I received this book. I didn’t know if I was ready to commit that there is only one book left after 5 years devoted to this series. To be perfectly honest I was completely numb to my expectations, I want to be surprised and alas fan-girly over my favourite characters. My answer: YES I WAS!

It was ironic to think that the actual setting for this book wasn’t in Morganville. Claire wanted to find herself somewhere else without the danger of fangs, blood and/or being the prey. But also after finding that Shane couldn’t trust tore her apart more than she knew. With a place at MIT her dream placement, she couldn’t refuse that Amelie would let her go, branch out from the border and from her normal Morganville life. This particular plot had it advantages and its disadvantages; without the thrill of the danger of Morganville, or the chills up your spine, I was unafraid what was going to happen next. Basically it lacked it dangerous, dramatic nature that we all love about Morganville. But Rachel Caine certainly has a way with words, her style is undeniable when its unputadownable.

Fall of Night was full of very energetic and interesting characters and personas. In this book Claire was a more vulnerable, and uncertain character in Fall of Night. Without the comfort of her friends she had very little familiarities around her. However, Morganville was still part of her, she had back bone, courage and knowledge of what to do in near-death or dangerous situations. Then Enter the vampires and that’s when it gets very interesting, Jesse aka Lady Grey was a kick-ass, red-headed bartender who has a tendency to some good, or so she thought. Jesse was such a great character to contend with yet she was so mysterious that you just wanted to know more about her. Oliver, moody as ever, good ol’ Myrinin without his crazy bunny slippers *sighs*, I missed those, Ha! And the Morganville gang; Shane, Eve and Michael. What I didn’t like about Rachel’s development of the characters was centered on Eve, I felt she was very whiny and completely out of her comfort zone that she felt the need to scream constantly throughout her existence of the book. It was a little tedious.

As relationships go is was pretty vague, rather it being about passion, love and danger, Fall of Night focused on soul searching and life journeys for one to find their true nature. Claire had to trust herself without Shane, but it was clear that when he followed it was out of love and protectiveness. A reason to have mixed emotions by from Claire’s perspective and even I. I wasn’t disappointed when Shane entered the novel, because I loved reading from his perspective and how raw his feelings for Claire really. While Claire had it hard, her decisions effected those closer to her, her friendships came at a price at saving them.

Once it was ‘Morganville, You will never want to leave’! Now its ‘You can’t take the girl out of Morganville’ and I think I prefer it that way. Personally I wouldn’t mind living their and being a kick-ass regular town gal! Rachel Caine took a risk and in the end it was wise choice indeed. Though there is still on unanswered questions: Which side will win, Vampires or Humans? Daylighters the FINAL installment to The Morganville Series will take on it biggest battle ever; Vampires vs Humans! Oh and did you all know Rachel Caine has agreed to do a series based on Morganville. I’d be very interested to see what will become that one…

Rating – 4 Stars

  1. I skimmed your review Emma because I'm only on like book 5 of this series. I'm so far behind, but I love this series thus far so it won't be a hardship catching up! I didn't know the next book would be the last, that's kind of exciting. I like knowing there's an end in sight sometimes, it really gives me something to look forward to and work toward:)

  2. Wow, I have been contemplating on starting this series but with so many books in my review pile, I just keep postponing it. Great to see that you enjoyed Caine's writing style. Shane sounds like a very interesting character. I'll have to find time to squeeze this series into my schedule. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I didn't read your full review as I might be reading this series at one point – especially since my friend really enjoys these books. But I'm sure it was a great review and I'm glad you gave it four stars and enjoyed it! 😀

  4. I skimmed your review, because I still haven't picked up the series and I heard it was optioned for a movie, or is that a different vampire book? Well, anywho, I'm glad that you really enjoyed this one! I definitely agree, 14 books must be a lot to be able to keep the character development going so they're not constantly stagnant, the relationships memorable, and the action from becoming overdone. I'm really glad that Rachel accomplished that, I'm glad that the risks and styles that Rachel chose to take and change worked out for you, too!

  5. These books always feel so strange when they're not set in Morganville! But I suppose I did appreciate the change of setting. This book didn't quite work for me as well as the rest of the series has done, but I'm glad you enjoyed it Emma. I'll still definitely follow it through to the end. Lovely review! 🙂
