Ellie Frias disappeared long before she vanished.
Tormented throughout middle school, she begins her freshman year with new clothes, new hair, and a plan: she doesn’t need to be popular, she just needs to blend in with the wallpaper.
It’s a lonely existence, but at least no one’s tripping her in the halls. In fact, no one notices her at all. Until Caleb Breward, tells her she’s beautiful and makes her believe it.
Ellie loves Caleb, but sometimes she doesn’t like him that much - his awkward smile, the possessive way he touches her, the tone he uses, how he ignores her one minute and can't get enough the next. And on one black night, she discovers the monster her boyfriend really is. Ellie wasn’t the first victim, but now, trapped, she has to watch it happen again and again. She tries to hold onto her happier memories in order to get past the cold days, waiting for someone to find her.
But no one searches for a girl they never noticed in the first place.
The Lovely Bones meets Asking For It - this is the searing, heartbreaking story of a lost teenager, and the town she leaves behind.
I'll be honest, this took me a long time to read! This was the hardest book I’ve ever had to read! This book isn’t for the faint-hearted, you need comfort and tea and all good things surrounding you to get you through this book. It’s a book that needs to heard, it’s Ellie’s and T.E. Carter’s story that needs to be read. It’s a book that is living and written proof that there is light at the end and surviving is key to life!
I believe this book needs no introduction or explanation I guess, I want to leave that you guys but it does need to be valued and respected and honoured. I Stop Somewhere is a sad book. Ellie is a girl that has something to say, something to change even in death. It’s in her death that something is done, to help other girls be heard and that’s the only beauty that comes of it. She is dead because she feel for someone sinister, who can charm his way through people’s lives, who can lie through his smile, who can own and suck the life right out of you and the town. He’s a guy that deserves to rot in hell. There is times as reader you go’No don’t go with him’ or 'Don’t do that!' But this is a rare story that you need to let Ellie use your eyes be the window to her soul. You have to leave it to her to tell it, to understand it on some level, to let her guide you through what some many other girls go through daily.
Working in a school is so rewarding but can be challenging too. Its sad to live in a world like that; that had these people who want to bad things. Working in an all girls school, this is the time that they are at their most vulnerable and we have to safeguard and protect them from it! As a librarian, I can be the greatest resource to give them these words to either escape, to learn or to even connect with character, characters like Ellie that say that we have to survive no matter what. It will hurt, but you will heal in time.
I’m glad I read I Stop Somewhere, because although its harrowing and a brutal read, it’s also important to reflect that life will continue to go on, that we do heal in our own time and that as humans our first rule of living is to survive!
A few quotes that really spoke to me through the journey of this book-
"I hated how easy it was. I hated how he made me feel. I hated that I didn't want him to stop.
"That was when I realised how easy pretty words can be."
"Nobody ever wants to talk. Nobody ever wants to be inconvenienced by all the things that happen to girls."
"Because all the things that make us different are also what we need to believe in when they try to break us."
